Instagram Stories are designed to be temporary — they self-delete after 24 hours. Whether you want to save your own story backup, preserve a public announcement from a brand you follow, or keep a clip from a creator before it disappears, downloading Stories requires a third-party tool. Vid1080 supports Instagram Stories downloads for public profiles — no login, no watermark, and no app to install.
What You Can and Cannot Download
- Public profile Stories: downloadable as long as the story is still active (within its 24-hour window)
- Stories that have been added to a Highlights reel: downloadable anytime — see our guide on Instagram Highlights
- Private account Stories: not accessible without following the account (login-dependent)
- Your own Stories: the Instagram app lets you save these natively — go to the Story and tap the download icon
How to Get the URL for an Instagram Story
Unlike feed posts, Instagram Stories do not have a shareable URL button in the standard app interface. To get a story URL, open Instagram in a desktop browser (instagram.com) rather than the mobile app. Navigate to the profile of the account whose story you want to download. Click on their profile photo to open the story. The URL in your browser address bar will contain the story ID — copy that URL and paste it into Vid1080.
Step-by-Step: Download an Instagram Story
- 1Open instagram.com in a desktop or mobile browser (not the Instagram app)
- 2Navigate to the public profile whose story you want to save
- 3Click the profile photo to open the active story
- 4Copy the full URL from the browser address bar
- 5Paste the URL into Vid1080 and click Download
- 6Select the story file and download — video stories save as MP4, photo stories save as JPG
Saving Instagram Stories on iPhone
On iPhone, open Safari and go to instagram.com. Log in if needed to view the story. Tap the profile photo to open the story, then copy the URL from Safari's address bar. Open a new Safari tab, go to Vid1080, paste the URL, and download. The file saves to your Files app or Photos library, depending on the file type and how your iPhone handles downloads.
What Happens If the Story Has Already Expired?
Unfortunately, once a 24-hour story has expired, it is permanently removed from Instagram's servers unless the creator saved it to their Highlights. No downloader — including Vid1080 — can retrieve an expired story because the content no longer exists at the URL. If a creator has added the story to a Highlights reel, you can still download it using the Highlights URL. Act quickly: save stories while they are still within their active window.
